BRAZIL: Operating concessionaire ViaMobilidade has awarded Alstom a contract to deploy ETCS Level 2 on São Paulo lines 8 (Diamante) and 9 (Esmeralda).
ViaMobilidade has a concesion to operate and maintain the two 1 600 mm gauge 3 V DC lines for 30 years from 2021. It has committed to invest around R$3∙8bn in modernisation and improvement works, and it ordered 36 eight-car Series 8900 Metropolis trainsets from Alstom in 2021.
The R$1bn signalling modernisation project is to be completed within six years. It aims to improve efficiency, increase the number of trains in service and optimise travel times, with real-time monitoring to provide more precise control of train movements and enhanced safety.
‘This is a significant milestone for both Alstom and the urban mobility landscape in São Paulo’, said Suely Sola, Managing Director of Alstom Brazil and Head of Signalling & Infrastructure for Latin America, on May 30. ‘This is advanced technology, already proven and effective in several European cities. The ETCS Level 2 system will enable more efficient, safer and more comfortable travel.’
