AUSTRALIA: Applications have opened for a four-year apprenticeship programme which Melbourne operator Yarra Trams uses to train people to manage and maintain the 500 km of overhead electrification on the world’s largest tram network.

During the first two years, apprentices will work on de-energised infrastructure alongside experienced line workers, before moving on to on live overhead.

Reflecting on her experience of the scheme, current third year apprentice Nicole Blethyn said, ’I knew that I’d be working with a lot of blokes when I applied for the role, but it’s been a really incredible experience overall, with everyone really supportive. I love coming to work every day.’

  • The Australasian Railway Association is offering more than 20 AusRAIL 2022 scholarships for young rail professionals, women in rail, and remote and regional rail professionals. Valued at over A$3 000, these include a ticket to attend AusRAIL 2022 and associated functions in Brisbane in December. Applications close on October 31.
