SWEDEN: Göteborg’s tram operator undertook ‘ecodriving’ trials during December and January which demonstrated average savings of 1·2 kWh/km.

‘We drive just over 14 million km per year, so a saving of 1·2 kWh/km is a huge amount in both electricity and money’, said Peter Sjöberg, electricity co-ordinator at Göteborgs Spårvägar.

The 17 drivers who took part in the trials of energy-saving driving techniques filled out a survey after each trip, indicating whether they were able to follow the timetable and reflecting on their experience. Almost 70% responded that driving was calmer and more pleasant. Only 4% experienced it as more strenuous, and that was only during the first few days of the project.

The trial is now being expanded to 30 drivers to gain more data and experience.
