ITALY: Roma operator ATAC has signed a contract with CAF for the supply of 20 more trams, while the first car from an earlier order arrived in the capital on March 6.
In October 2023 ATAC selected CAF for a €457m framework contract to supply up to 121 bidirectional trams, and placed a €130m firm order for an initial 40 cars. A further 20 were ordered in October 2024, and both CAF and ATAC have told Railway Gazette International that the latest option for 20 more was called off in January 2026. This has taken the total number of trams being procured to 80.
First new tram in 20 years
The first tram from the framework was shipped to the port of Civitavecchia, where it was dismantled into two parts and transported by road to ATAC’s Via Prenestina depot, where it is due to start a test programme.

A total of 10 trams are scheduled to gradually arrive by June, with another 10 by the end of the year. According to ATAC, this is the first time in over 20 years that the city has welcomed a newly built tram vehicle.
The cars are planned to run both on new and existing lines, replacing ATAC’s Stanga trams which are now over 70 years old.

ATAC expects that a number of the trams on order will be equipped for off-wire operation using supercapacitors. These are to be charged while the trams are running under the overhead line.
The 33·5 m long vehicles have a capacity of 215 passengers, with 68 seats and two wheelchair spaces.
