BELGIUM: De Lijn has been testing a driver assistance system developed by Gent-based company OTIV on Antwerpen tram Route 1.

The system monitors the area around the tram and generates audiovisual warnings in the event of possible danger.

Wearable technology recorded the driver’s activity, eye movements, stress level and heart rate. This provides data which is being analysed by researchers at University College London to gain insight into the impact of the system on the alertness and workload.

The tests are part of the EU-backed Advanced Rail Innovation for Safety & Efficiency research project which involves partners from Belgium, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and the UK.
