Chennai metro train

INDIA: Chennai Metro Rail Ltd has awarded Faiveley Transport Rail Technologies India a contract to retrofit metro cars with an anti-drag safety system which would stop the train if a sari, bag or belt gets trapped in the doors.

CMRL said it had not yet had any accidents caused by door entrapment, and the Rs483m contract announced on October 27 is a proactive measure aimed at strengthening passenger protection, particularly for women, and ensuring world-class safety standards.

The 52 Phase 1 trainsets operating on the Blue and Green lines currently have an obstacle detection system that identifies objects obstructing the doors when they close at stations. The new anti-drag system will further enhance safety by being able to detecting thinner objects and any pulling force as the train begins to move, and automatically trigger the emergency brake and alert the driver.

Anti-drag features will be incorporated as a standard provision in all trains being procured under Phase 2 of the metro scheme.
