PARC BIT STATION

SPAIN: An extension of Mallorca’s metre-gauge metro Line M1 from Universitat de les Illes Balears to the Parc Bit technology campus was opened by operator SFM on July 2.

The 1·4 km extension built by Comsa, Tecsa, Mab and Coexa includes a 1·1 km underground section. Completion was delayed by torrential rain in late October 2024.

The €28·9m project was supported by €20m of EU Next Generation co-financing.

Around 3 000 people work at 100 companies at Parc Bit, with 85% of journeys to and from the site currently made by private car. It is hoped that the extension offering a 12 min journey time to the Plaça d’Espanya terminus in central Palma will increase overall metro ridership by between 10% and 17% from the 2·1 million journeys recorded in 2024.
