VIETNAM: Preparatory route clearance work began on March 20 to create the alignment for the city’s 39·6 km long, fully automated metro Line 5. The initial works involve lane closures on the Thang Long motorway to clear the right-of way.

Line 5 is to link Văn Cao on the under-construction Line 2 in the city centre with Hòa Lạc in the west; the line will have two depots. Between Văn Cao and the National Convention Center, the line will be built in a tunnel, serving six underground stations. West of NCC station, it will run at grade in the central reservation of the highway, serving 13 street-level and one elevated station.

Component Project 1, covering property purchase, utility relocation and site clearance works, as well as site preparation at the Son Dong Depot, has been underway since December. Component Project 2 covering full-scale construction is yet to start.

Line 5 is to have capacity to handle 19 892 passengers per hour per direction in the initial phase up to 2033, increasing to 38 286 passengers/h/direction by 2055. Completion is expected by 2030.
