USA: The first of 219 Siemens S200 light rail vehicles for San Francisco’s Muni network has entered revenue service, the manufacturer announced on November 20.

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency signed a $648m contract in September 2014 covering a firm order for 175 LRVs with options for up to 85 more. It subsequently exercised an option for 40 LRVs and then another for four.

Siemens says that the Muni order is its largest for LRVs placed in the USA. It is assembling the vehicles at its Sacramento plant.

The high-floor S200 vehicles are equipped with regenerative braking and LED lighting.
