Asia: International freight services between Russia and China began using the new 40 km cross-border line between Makhalino and Hunchun during June.

Canada: Alberta RailNet took over the 586 km ex-CN route from Swan Landing to Hythe and Tangent on June 27.

CN and CP have agreed to halt further branch line abandonments until a federal government review of grain transport has been completed at the end of September.

Denmark: DSB begins trials this month with 10 double-deck inter-city coaches leased from Swiss Federal Railways. DSB is short of stock following a traffic boom after opening of the Great Belt rail link.

Europe: The validity dates of national and international timetables are to change from 2002. The next will run from May 28 2000 to June 9 2001, and the following to December 14 2002.
