A dispute over seats on the CSX board (RG 7.08 p422) ended on September 16 with the rejection of the company’s legal action by a federal court. CSX had sought to invalidate the election of two nominees from The Children’s Investment Fund (TCI) and 3G Capital Partners but, following the ruling, Tim O’Toole (right) and Christopher Hohn were invited to join the board immediately, replacing Dr William Richardson and Dr Frank Royal.

Michal Nebeský has been appointed Deputy Director-General for Economics and a member of the board at Czech Railways, replacing Vladimír Filip who has moved to rail infrastructure manager SŽDC.

Paul Thomas has been named Chairman of the UK’s Rail Safety & Standards Board.

Geoff Hoon has succeeded Ruth Kelly as the UK’s Secretary of State for Transport. Transport Minister Tom Harris has been replaced by Lord Andrew Adonis who is responsible for national networks, cleaner fuels and Crossrail. Under-Secretary of State Paul Clark is responsible for light rail and accessibility and Jim Fitzpatrick for London issues.

Ludolf Kerkeling will take over as General Manager at Veolia Cargo’s German subsidiary Rail4chem when Sven Flore leaves on January 1 2009.

Joël Lebreton has been named Chairman & CEO of public transport operator Transdev, succeeding Philippe Segretain. His previous position as Group Managing Director has been filled by François-Xavier Perin.

Peter Strachan has been appointed CEO of TransLink Transit Authority by Queensland’s Minister for Transport John Mickel.

Ion Dedu has been named General Manager at Bucuresti public transport operator RATB.

Rob Mooren will become Managing Director of Arcadis Nederland on January 1 2009, succeeding Douwe Kras.

Phil Downes has left Amey to join Parsons Brinckerhoff as Director of Rail for the UK, Europe & Africa.

Sir Ian McAllister has announced his intention to step down as Chairman of Network Rail next year. Group Finance Director Ron Henderson will retire within the next few months.

Nariaki Nakayama, who was named Japan’s Minister for Land, Infrastructure & Transport on September 24 following the appointment of Prime Minister Taro Aso, stepped down from his post on September 28 and was replaced by Kazuyoshi Kaneko.

Reuben Marumahoko has been appointed Minister for Transport in Zimbabwe.

Pál Szabó, Hungary’s Minister of Transport, and MÁV Chairman Miklos Kamaras have both resigned following a train crash near Monorierdo on October 6. Istvan Heinczinger, CEO of MÁV, also offered his resignation, but it was refused by Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcasny. The rear-end collision killed four people and injured 26.

Idrose Mohamed is to head Malaysia’s Public Land Transportation Commission.

Henri Kuitunen and Antti Lagerroos have resigned from their positions as CEO and Chairman respectively at state-owned Finnish operator VR.

Aftab Ahmad Memon has taken over as Chief Commercial Manager, Passenger, in place of Anzar Ismail Rizvi.

PR’s former Additional General Manager, Infrastructure, Saeed Akhtar has been named Inspector of Railways for the federal government, exchanging posts with Tariq Yaseen.

Ahsan Mehmood Mian has been appointed Managing Director of the Risalpur Locomotive Factory, being succeeded as Chief Mechanical Engineer, Carriage & Wagon, by Najamul Hassan. Saeed Khan becomes Chief Electrical Engineer, and is replaced as Chief Controller of Stores by Khalid Mohiuddin.

Gérard Blanc has retired as Chief Operating Officer & Senior Vice-President, Operations, at Alstom Transport, although he will continue with the company as a special advisor to President Philippe Mellier. Operations will now be divided into two sections, with the appointments of Thierry Best as Senior Vice-President, Operations, Rolling Stock & Components and Emilio Gallocchio as Senior Vice-President, Operations, Signalling, Maintenance & Services.
