Robert D Krebs, Chairman, President & CEO of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp, has been elected Chairman of the Association of American Railroads for 1999. Stephen T Hart has been appointed Senior Vice President, Policy & Communications.

Dipl-Ing Theo Weiss has been appointed as Project Manager for Swiss Federal Railways’ ICN trains (RG12.98 p851).

Thomas Peczerski has joined Greenbrier Companies as General Manager of its manufacturing operations in Poland (Rail Business Report 1999 p17). He is also President of WagonySwidnica.

Peter Sul, a minority shareholder in Lovers Rail, has been replaced as a director by Yves Lallemant of CGEA, which has the controlling share of Lovers Rail.

Charles Mackay took over as Deputy Chairman of Eurotunnel on January 1, replacing Sir Robert Malpas.

Robert Brown has been named President & CEO of Bombardier Inc, replacing Laurent Beaudoin, who has headed the company since 1966, and will become Executive Chairman and President of Bombardier’s executive committee.

Daniel Penovich has been elected Managing Director of Sales, Marketing & Business Development for General American Transportation Corp, the railcar leasing and management subsidiary of GATX Corp.

Dalibor Zeleny has been appointed General Manager of Czech Railways, replacing Vladimir Sosna.

Paul Binsted has been appointed Chairman of State Rail Authority of New South Wales.

C Jacob Greeling has joined short line operator RailAmerica as Senior Operations Officer. Larry L Ross becomes Senior Transportation Officer.

Timothy B Buresh has been appointed Director of Construction & Engineering for the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority in Los Angeles.

Derek Smith has been appointed as Managing Director of London Underground and an executive member of the London Transport board with effect from February 1. Joining LU from the health sector where he has been Chief Executive of King’s Healthcare NHS Trust since 1993, he succeeds Denis Tunnicliffe who will now concentrate on his position as Chief Executive of London Transport.

Enrique Fernandez has been elected President of the UIC Passenger Commission.

Reiner Woermann has been named Vice President of the Association of German Transport Operators (VDV).

Carl-Henrik Lundstrøm has been named acting Secretary-General of the Community of European Railways following the departure of Trevor Halvorsen.

Gary Thomas has joined Dallas Area Rapid Transit as Senior Vice President, Project Management.

Vic Sergeant is to retire as Senior Systems Engineer of GE Transportation Systems on January 31, to set up a consultancy known as Mavic International.

Romanian restructuring

With the restructuring of Romanian State Railways from October 1, former SNCFR President Simut Viorel has become General Manager of the state-owned infrastructure business Compania Nationala CFR SA. Culda Emanoil is named Infrastructure Manager and Simion Ion becomes Track Manager. Other senior managers are Buciuman Gheorghe, Installation & Signalling; Olievschi Vasile, Technical; Daschievici Virgil, International Affairs, Ciovica Ion, Traffic; Unguresan Gheorghe, Economics; Seileanu Dan, Property; Vaduva Gavrila, Human Resources; and Craciun Orlando, Traffic Security.

Buruiana George becomes General Manager of freight operator CFR Marfa SA, with Chinde Sorin as Marketing Manager. Passenger operator CFR Calatori SA is headed by General Manager Bota Valentin, with Soare Ion as Marketing Manager.

Popeanga Silvia becomes General Manager of the Railway Management Company SMF, with Dicea Gheorghe as Finance Manager. Historic debts have been transferred to the Railway Properties Administration Company SAAF, where Dinu Mircea is General Manager and Vladuti Mircea the Technical Manager.

Overseeing the new structure is the Romanian Railway Authority Autoritatea Feroviara Romana, which came into operation on November 1. This is headed by General Manager Ispas Eugen and Chief State Inspector Dobrescu Lucian.
