South African Treasury Director-General Maria Ramos is to become Group Chief Executive of Transnet on January 1, when Mafika Mkwanazi will leave to take up a post in the private sector.

Nick Newton has become Deputy Chief Executive of the Strategic Rail Authority. He will be Chairman of South Eastern Trains, the SRA company which is to take over the Connex South Eastern franchise (RG 8.03 p484). Newton will also be responsible for business planning and human resources. Nicola Shaw succeeds him as Managing Director, Operations, and Chris Austin becomes Executive Director, Community Rail Development.

The Bush administration has nominated to the Amtrak Board of Directors former American Airlines CEO Robert L Crandall, former World Bank official Louis S Thompson and Floyd Hall, an executive with experience in reviving troubled companies. The terms of existing members John Robert Smith and Michael Dukakis expired in June, and the terms of Lynwood Holton and Amy Rosen expired in September.

Sipho Madonsela has been appointed Chairman of the eight-member board of South Africa’s recently-formed Rail Safety Regulator. A CEO and General Managers will be appointed by January, and the first safety permits issued by November 2004.
