Cattron has added a speed control feature to its MP96 line of portable radio remote control systems, allowing train speed and bulk handling equipment to be controlled by one person during loading. An axle impulse device installed on the locomotive allows speed to be calculated in 0·05 km/h increments.

Cam-Tech (UK) Ltd is installing 144 CCTV cameras supplied by Norbain SD Ltd on 38 stations of the Merseyrail Electrics network in Great Britain. Colour pictures from fixed or pan-tilt cameras are sent by ISDN line to ticket offices and the Gilmoss control centre.

Apollo Fire Detectors Ltd has supplied over 5000 XP95 analogue addressable monitors, mainly incorporating optical smoke detectors, for public areas, offices and equipment rooms on London Underground’s Jubilee Line Extension. A total of 1000 XP95 input/output units have also been supplied to control fire doors and other safety equipment.

A GS150.14TR rail-mounted crane from Mannesmann Dematic Gottwald was recently used during infrastructure work at Wetter in Germany to lift 13m and 18m temporary bridge sections, weighing 22 tonnes and 39 tonnes each respectively. Leased by contractor Frenzel from Leonard Weiss, the crane can lift track sections up to 20m ahead of its front buffer beam and was able to operate under catenary.

Avery Dennison has developed Film 7110 to facilitate easy removal of graffiti. With a working life of at least five years, the film is made from 23micron polyester in a high-gloss or matt finish, backed with a permanent-grade acrylic adhesive.Racal Telecom has won a £9m four-year contract to provide managed handset services to Britain’s Railtrack. The first phase of the three-year plan to replace 270 Railtrack PBXs with Ericsson MD110 switches should be completed in June.

Dewhurst has supplied PA51 LED door status indicators to Adtranz for external mounting on Class 168 diesel multiple-units ordered by Chiltern Railways. The PA51 also features on the prototype ’Classic’ rebodied MkI EMU from Adtranz.

Craig & Derricott has introduced the 30 series of low-profile push buttons for rolling stock cabs. Designed for flush fixing in a 30·5mm diameter hole, the 30 series offers round or square bezels with satin, bright or black chrome finishes and buttons in six standard colours.

FP Displays has launched a range of 5x7mm modules for LED displays. Light is shone across the side of each dot, giving greater visibility as well as thinner and lighter displays.

Saft has supplied batteries each comprising 76 SRM105FR cells for the Airport Express and Tung Chung trainsets for Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway Corp. Batteries with 72 SRX145 cells each have been specified for refurbished Kowloon Canton Railway Corp electric multiple-units.
