Graduate student Naveen Venkataraman has undertaken a three-month placement with US freight railroad CSX during which he helped the company to identify $1·2m in cost savings and reduce emissions by up to 3 000 tonnes per year. Venkataraman is a member of the Environmental Defense Fund’s Climate Corps, and he worked with CSX on projects to improve the energy efficiency of air compressors in marshalling yards and its data centre in Jacksonville.

The University of Wolverhampton is to launch a part-time, 12-month postgraduate course in the Management of Passenger Transport Emergency Incidents, to be overseen by its School of Health & Wellbeing. The course has been designed in partnership with the Confederation of Passenger Transport and the Institution of Railway Operators, and it is claimed to be the first of its kind in the UK.

Tunnel operation training and pre-cast concrete manufacturing are among the first vocational courses to be launched at Crossrail Ltd’s Tunnelling & Underground Construction Academy in Ilford. TUCA is welcoming its first students as part of a phased opening that runs through to next year (RG 6.11 p91).
