VICTORIA Premier Steve Bracks announced on July 12 that the Kamco consortium had been selected by the Transport Ticketing Authority for a A$494m contract to supply and operate a state-wide smart card fare collection system.

Led by US information technology group Keane Corp, the consortium includes ticket machine manufacturer Ascom, Perth-based ERG group which will be responsible for installation and management, and Giesecke & Devrient which will supply the smart cards.

Equipment is to be installed at 270 stations in Melbourne and across Victoria, and on 480 trams and 1650 buses, covering around 410 million passenger journeys per year. Under the terms of the 12-year contract, the system is due to be operational in 2007.
