TRIALS concluded towards the end of April in the states of Washington and Oregon have confirmed the full range of capabilities of Positive Train Separation equipment being developed by GE Harris in conjunction with Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe (RG 8.97 p539). This should lead to the formal Proof of Concept being achieved this month or next.
The PTS trial programme was carried out in four stages, with more functions added progressively in each release. The first three releases last year demonstrated many of the hoped-for benefits, and successful completion of Release Four means that the way is clear to move on to the next stage of the programme, which is implementation of the GE Harris Precision Train Control
