ITALY: The Moovit app can now be used to both plan and pay for multi-modal journeys around Roma, in a development which public transport operator ATAC expects to be particularly useful for the millions of tourist who arrive in the eternal city every year.

‘Foreign visitors who already use Moovit in their own countries will be able to continue doing so in Roma as well, without having to download new apps or face language barriers’, said Paoli Aielli, General Director of city transport operator ATAC. ‘They will be able to purchase tickets directly in the app, navigate the city’s public transport system with ease, and enjoy a smoother, more intuitive, and seamless travel experience. This makes Roma even more welcoming and accessible for those arriving from abroad.’
Moovit says its iOS and Android app is now available in 45 languages and covers 3 500 cities across 112 countries.
Deployment in Roma with in-app ticket purchasing powered by Wetechnology has been undertaken as part of the national MaaS4Italy project, led by the Department for Digital Transformation with the support of the Ministry of Infrastructure & Transport. During the test phase the app was used by travellers from more than 42 countries. Features include multimodal journey planning with real-time information, live directions, alerts when to alight and service updates to help avoid disruptions.
‘The partnership between ATAC and Moovit, active for several years now, enables Moovit to provide arrival predictions for public transport in Rome with a level of accuracy that, compared to other cities, is unique’, said Aielli. ‘The integration of the ticket purchasing feature marks a further step forward.’
Samuel Sed Piazza, Director of Sales & Global Partnerships at Moovit, said ‘as urban mobility continues to evolve, having precise travel planning solutions and easy access to ticket purchasing has become essential.’
