CHINA: Siemens has announced its entry into the Chinese low-floor tram market with a contract to supply drive components for seven low-floor trams which CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co is to supply to Guangzhou.

Siemens is to supply propulsion and vehicle control, braking and auxiliary systems, as well as powered bogies. The basis for the order is a technical licensing and co-operation agreement between Siemens and CSR Zhuzhou. The contract value is undisclosed.

The trams are to run on a circular route in the Haizhou district of Guangzhou. The first 7·7 km section will link Canton Tower and Wanshengwei, where interchange will be provided with metro lines 4 and 8. The ten-stop section is due to open in late 2014. The operator will be Guangzhou Metro Corp subsidiary Guangzhou Tram Co Ltd.
