AUSTRALIA: The three consortia shortlisted in August to bid for the Permanent Route Infrastructure contract to construct the tunnels and station boxes on Sydney Metro Stage 1 have submitted their tenders.

Phase 1 will run from Central to Rozelle and will form the backbone of the future metro network.

The three consortia are:

  • Line 1: McConnell Dowell Corp, Abigroup and Obayashi Corp
  • MetroPrimo: Leighton Contractors and SELI Spa
  • Thiess /John Holland joint venture

The PRI tenders will now be assessed, with a decision expected in the second quarter of 2010. Construction is due to start in mid-2010.

Two consortia are currently preparing bids for the Integrated Metro Operations contract for Phase 1. Three sample station designs have been developed during workshops attended by architects and artists. Once finalised, the designs will be provided to the successful IMO contractor who will build the stations.

Planning is also progressing on Stage 2. A joint feasibility study by the state and federal governments has identified the preferred alignment and station locations for the section between Central and Westmead.
