|---|---|---|
| Bidder | EMUs | Maintenance |
| Alstom Polska | 4·1 | 2·8 |
| Stadler | 4·0 | 3·3 |
On September 3 the operator said that Alstom’s offer was almost 400m złoty cheaper than a rival bid from Stadler. Other criteria evaluated included energy efficiency and delivery times. The manufacturer will provide 30 years of maintenance, and there will be an option to order another 30 vehicles.
Alstom told Railway Gazette International ’we are grateful to PKP Intercity for this choice. As the largest manufacturer and exporter of rolling stock in Poland, we ensure that the trains will be produced by Alstom’s Polish facilities in Chorzów and Nadarzyn. We are looking forward to signing the contract with PKP Intercity.’
Entry into service is planned in around 3½ years, with PKP Intercity planning to use the EMUs on services from Warszawa to Gdańsk, Łódź, Olsztyn, Wrocław, Kraków, Białystok and Terespol. They will be able to operate on the Czech national network as well as in Poland.
The EMUs are to be designed for long-distance travel, with a capacity of more than 500 passengers in two classes and a quiet zone and a children’s area. Requirements include comfortable seats with individual tables, armrests, footrests and adjustable lighting, as well as wi-fi, USB and electrical sockets, air-conditioning, passenger information screens, vending machines and spaces for bicycles and large luggage. Technical requirements include 25 kV 50 Hz and 3 kV DC operation, ETCS, an onboard diagnostics system, CCTV and GPS.
The current tendering process was launched in 2024, after previous attempts in 2021 and 2023 were cancelled when the bids exceeded the budget.
