MYANMAR: A consortium of Japanese companies Marubeni and IHI Corp’s Niigata Transys has signed a ¥7bn agreement to supply 24 diesel-electric multiple-unit cars to Myanma Railways.

Consortium leader Marubeni will be in charge of the commercial side of the contract signed on February 9, while Niigata Transys will be responsible for design, manufacturing, testing and staff training.

The DMU order is part of the Yangon – Mandalay Railway Improvement Project. The first phase is being financed by a ¥45bn loan from the Japanese government, and aims to reduce the journey time on the 267 km Yangon – Naypyidaw – Taungoo section of the route from 7 h to 3 h 20 min.
