ITALY: Ferrovie Appulo Lucane has awarded Stadler a €22·8m contract to supply four three-car 950 mm gauge diesel multiple-units for its network around Bari, with an option for a further four.

The tailor-made DMUs are to be delivered within 24 months, Stadler said when it announced the contract on January 14.

This will take the FAL fleet Stadler DMUs to 23, which the manufacturer said would be ‘the largest and most modern fleet of narrow gauge vehicles in Italy’.

The latest units will be 52·5 m long with a lightweight aluminium composite construction, an axleload of 12 tonnes and engines meeting Stage IIIB emission standards. They will be about 50% low-floor, with 154 seats and a total capacity of 306 passengers. The cab and passenger areas will be air-conditioned, and there will be an accessible toilet.
