Newag is to rebuild a further 10 ST44 diesel locomotives to the 311Da design for PKP LHS.

POLAND: Broad gauge freight line operator PKP LHS and Newag signed a 95m złoty contract on July 26 covering the rebuilding of a further 10 ST44 diesel locomotives to the 311Da design. The modernised locomotives are expected to return to service between late March and the end of 2018.

The 311D/311Da heavy freight locomotive is based on a complete modernisation of locomotives from the Soviet-built M62 family, designated ST44 in Poland.

PKP LHS currently has 17 of the 311Da locomotives in service on the 1 520 mm gauge line which runs 400 km from the Ukrainian border to Sławków near Katowice. Rebuilding a further 10 locomotives will increase standardisation of the fleet, help facilitate multiple working and simplify maintenance systems.

  • PKP LHS has awarded a consortium led by Torkol a 35m złoty contract to undertake works to reduce noise from the track on sections of the route totalling 70 km.
