USA: Norfolk Southern has ordered 40 Wabtec ES44AC locomotives in its first new loco purchase since 2022.

Deliveries to the railway’s Chattanooga workshop are scheduled for the second half of 2026.

NS said the locos would be built to its specifications, with the newest generation of control systems, real-time remote diagnostics and live operational views. The Evolution Series engines will offer significant fuel savings and lower operating costs than the older locos they will replace, while crews will benefit from quieter cabs and improved ride quality.

‘These locomotives feature some of the latest advancements in rail technology, blending sophisticated control systems with real-time remote diagnostics to support efficient operations’, said David Woodman, Wabtec Group Vice-President for Global Locomotive Platforms, on January 22. ‘Equipped with a network of advanced sensors, Norfolk Southern gains unparalleled visibility and reliability. These capabilities not only enhance operational performance but also drive progress toward long-term sustainability in freight rail.’

Ryan Stege, NS Senior Director Locomotive Operations & Maintenance, said ‘as we continue to enhance North America’s most modern fleet, the new locomotives will provide the industry’s best hauling power and reduced fuel consumption — ultimately benefiting customers and the environment.’
