Pesa completes InterRegio EMU for Romania (image ARF) (2)

ROMANIA: Pesa Bydgoszcz has completed the production of the first of 29 three-car InterRegio electric multiple-units being supplied for Romania’s railway reform authority ARF.

The first vehicle was presented by the manufacturer to representatives of ARF who visited Pesa’s factory on September 3 to review the production process.

The first EMU is scheduled to be transported to Romania in late September to carry out test runs to obtain the necessary certifications.

ARF ordered 20 type RE-IR2 InterRegio EMUs in June 2024 and an additional nine this June. The deal includes the provision of maintenance for 15 years for all 29 trainsets.

The EMU is capable of 160 km/h operation, and has capacity for 191 seated passengers. It is equipped with onboard equipment for ETCS, as well as for Romania’s PZB 90 train protection system.

The InterRegio EMUs are due to serve on the following routes:

  • Cluj Napoca – Sighișoara – Brașov;
  • Cluj Napoca – Alba lulia – Simeria – Târgu Jiu – Craiova;
  • Brașov – Ploiești – Buzău – Focșani – Bacău – Pașcani – Iași/Suceava;
  • Galați – Mărășești – Bacău – Pașcani – lași/Suceava;
  • Galați – Brăila – Făurei – Fetești – Constanța (– Mangalia);
  • (Mangalia –) Constanța – Fetești – Brăila – Mărășești – Bacău – Pașcani – Iași/Suceava;
  • (Giurgiu –) București – Ciulnița – Călărași.

Following the completion of current electrification works on the Cluj Napoca – Oradea and Craiova – Calafat lines, they would also serve on the Oradea – Cluj Napoca – Sighișoara – Brașov, and Cluj Napoca – Alba lulia – Simeria – Târgu Jiu – Craiova – Calafat routes.

Pesa is also supplying 62 three-car Regio160 regional EMUs for ARF under a separate contract. The first of these vehicles were unveiled in May, and are currently being tested in Romania.
