MONGOLIA: A feasibility study for the development of a proposed two-line tramway in Ulaanbaatar was approved by committees of the Ministry of Roads & Transport in July.
The first line would start at Zunjin in the north of the city and run 11 km to the central Sükhbaatar Square with 16 stops. The second line would run 15 km from the square to the office of the General Authority for Archives in the southwest of the city with 23 stops.
Electric trams are expected to help reduce road congestion and air pollution, enabling the average road traffic speeds to increase by 25%.
Studies are also underway for a proposed 19·4 km metro in the city. The UK Department for Transport’s rail consultancy Crossrail International has an ongoing role as adviser, and a delegation from Ulaanbaatar recently visited Tottenham Court Road station on London’s Elizabeth Line to study transit-oriented development.
