BRAZIL: Alstom has been awarded its largest metro signalling contract covering the conversion of lines 1, 2 and 3 of the São Paulo metro to fully automated operation.

The contract is worth around €280m and covers the complete renewal of the existing train control system. Alstom will equip the lines with its Urbalis communication-based train control system. Installation of the equipment is scheduled to start in 2010, and Alstom is required to ensure there is no disruption to services during the resignalling project.

Automatic Train Operation has been a feature of the São Paulo metro since the first section of Line 1 opened in 1974, with drivers responsible for the start procedure at each station. Comparatively few existing metro lines have been converted to fully automated operation.

  • CAF is to supply 17 six-car trainsets for lines 1 and 3 of the São Paulo metro, under a separate contract worth €184m. Deliveries are scheduled for completion by the end of 2010.
