RUSSIA: Bombardier Transportation and Uralvagonzavod signed an agreement to jointly develop metro trains and trams on July 12.

Metro trains will be 'specifically designed for the challenging requirements' of Moscow and other cities in the CIS region, while Bombardier will provide UVZ with a licence to manufacture low-floor trams with Bombardier technology in Russia. The licensed product would be a variant of the Flexity family, intended for operation on existing networks.

UVZ Chief Executive Oleg Sienko said joint engineering and production would 'significantly push the development of the mass transit sector and enhance the image of major Russian cities' in the run-up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

  • Defence, railway and construction machinery manufacturer UVZ produced 11 010 open wagons, 2 820 tank wagons and 88 flat cars in the first half of 2012, up 109% on last year.
