THAILAND: Mass Rapid Transit Authority signed a 79·2bn baht contract for construction of the first section of the Orange Line on February 9. Work is due to begin in June, with opening of the metro line due in 2023.

A joint venture of CH Karnchang, Sino-Thai Engineering & Construction, Italian-Thai Development and Unique Engineering & Construction is to build the 22·6 km section from Thailand Cultural Centre to Suwinthawong in the east of the city. There will be 10 underground and seven elevated stations.

A planned second phase would extend the route by 17·5 km west to Taling Chan.
