GERMANY: Deutsche Bahn has awarded contracts to nine companies for work on the reactivation of the disused Siemensbahn as part of the Berlin S-Bahn network.

The project is to be delivered through an alliancing model, with the nine firms sharing five contract packages. This co-operative approach is intended to ensure that the work is delivered on time and within budget. All partners involved in the planning and implementation phases are expected to harness ‘interdisciplinary synergies’, the national railway explained.

DB has selected Obermeyer Group and Schüßler Plan for the planning package, while Porr, KGaA, Kemna Bau and MCE will undertake structural engineering for the new construction elements. Eiffage SEH Engineering, Eiffage STC and Leonhard Weiss will be responsible for the structural engineering – repair package, covering the renovation of existing infrastructure. Sächsische Bau will provide the power supply network, substations and signalling.

The 4·5 km line between Jungfernheide and Gartenfeld has been out of use since 1980, and is scheduled to reopen for revenue services in 2029. Its reactivation is part of a wider strategy to provide environmentally sustainable mobility for the capital region.
