INNOTRANS: The first Siemens Smartron electric locomotive is on show at InnoTrans 2018 in Berlin.

Announced earlier this year, the Smartron is a budget version of Siemens’ successful Vectron modular locomotive family.

German operator EGP placed the first order on June 21, signing a contract for three to be delivered in 2019.

The use of a standard configuration with one specification, one Capri Blue livery and one price offers German freight operators faster delivery times and low price, Siemens Mobility CEO Sabrina Soussan told Railway Gazette at InnoTrans. The price of a single locomotive is around €2·5m

The 15 kV 16 Hz Smartron is rated at 5·6 MW, has a maximum speed of 140 km/h, weighs 83 tonnes and is equipped with the PZB/LZB train protection system.
