UK: On August 9 Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin confirmed the government's support for plans to electrify the 16 km single-track branch from Oxenholme station on the West Coast Main Line to Windermere.

Subject to a business case confirming that the £16m project offers value for money, infrastructure manager Network Rail would be asked to undertake the work in conjunction with other ongoing electrification projects in the northwest of England. Completion is envisaged by 2016.

The branch serves the Lake District National Park. 'This is a key line to one of the most important tourist areas in the UK and I believe the rail industry has a role in making sure more people can travel comfortably to enjoy the beautiful lakes', said McLoughlin.
