USA: The first two-car set of M-8 EMUs for Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line went on public display for the first time on December 24.

The State of Connecticut is paying almost $700m for 300 vehicles to replace the oldest cars in the existing fleet and expand capacity. In addition, about 150 newer vehicles are being refurbished. When the programme is completed, the New Haven Line will have 450 cars, about 105 more than now. There is also an option for another 80 M-8s.

The 105-seat cars, which are being built in Japan by Kawasaki Rail Car, will be delivered over the next five years; the initial cars are expected to enter revenue service later in 2010 following a comprehensive test programme. The New Haven Line carries more than 35 million passengers a year.
