BOMBARDIER and its Malaysian partner Hartasuma announced on August 30 that a contract had been agreed with Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad to upgrade lineside electrical and mechanical systems on Kuala Lumpur's Kelana Jaya Line (formerly known as Putra).

The contract is valued at approximately €87m, with Bombardier's share being worth around €60m. The project is scheduled for completion in late spring 2009.

The upgrade will permit the introduction of an additional 88 Bombardier Advanced Rapid Transit mk II vehicles now being produced to expand the Kelana Jaya fleet. Prasarana ordered the new vehicles under a separate contract with Bombardier and Hartasuma in October 2006. This contract includes options for Prasarana, the state-owned company that owns the linear-motored metro, to purchase another 52 cars.

The infrastructure upgrade and fleet expansion is expected to more than double capacity on the line to about 370 000 passengers/day.
