BRAZIL: A delegation led by Ferrovia Transnordestina Logística and including Minister of Transport Renan Filho visited the Marcopolo Rail plant in Caixas do Sol on January 29 to see the three two-car Prosper City diesel multiple-units the company is building for the 13 km Araparica suburban rail project.

FTL owns the largely moribund 1 000 mm gauge cross-city railway which has been out of use since 2011. It is managing the reconstruction and extension works now under way as well as the rolling stock procurement.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held in August 2025. The line will start from the João Paulo II district in the south of the city and follow the reconstructed railway alignment for 9 km northwards through the city centre. Trains will then diverge west onto 4 km of newly built alignment to reach the Federal University of Alagoas campus.

The DMUs will be identical to those being supplied for Teresina, and ‘fully customised to meet the specific needs of the local operation’, Marcopolo Rail told Railway Gazette International. ’Their production will take place throughout 2026.’
